American Military Executes Deadly Strike in Pacific, Resulting in 4 Fatalities
As stated by a senior defense spokesperson, the American armed forces executed a lethal strike on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, killing four people.
“A US joint task force conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route and was engaged in illicit drug transport. A total of four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no US military forces were harmed.”
Context and Prior Strikes
This announcement follows a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. In that announcement on social media, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, vowing to escalate the military buildup.
Just on the previous day, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Justifies Tactics Amidst Pressure
The government has faced increasing demands to make public video of a September 2nd vessel attack. But, officials have declined to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a success, saying it has stopped drugs from reaching US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the limits of lawful warfare.
Although the administration has said the operation is about halting drugs headed to the US, comments from a top official appeared to suggest a broader political objective. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor said the leader “wants to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”
This indicates the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's sitting leadership.
