British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Antony Price, the groundbreaking style architect behind some of the most iconic looks worn by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.
He was celebrated for his defined forms and dramatic aesthetics, most notably the soft-colored suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"In a tribute, they called him a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message online."
Price's death comes shortly after he debuted his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to study at the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was responsible for the tight, button-detailed trousers that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He founded his own label in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Working with Legends
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His trademark skill to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "genuine original," according to the British Fashion Council.
By the 1990s, he started creating ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, including various looks for her American tour following her marriage.
Following a profession lasting half a century, Price held his ultimate fashion presentation in London recently in collaboration with the design house 16Arlington.
