The English squad will commence their 2028 European Championship adventure at the the home of Manchester City, on the condition that they secure the relatively straightforward passage for a championship staged throughout most of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.

Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an England men’s fixture since the spring of 2016, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is highly likely to welcome the England side for their opening fixture on a Saturday in June 2028.

The English side are scheduled to play their final two group matches at the national stadium, but, if they top Group B, their round of 16 match would take place at Newcastle’s St James’ Park. Placing second would mean starting the knockouts at Everton’s ground.

Championship Launch and Protest

The tournament was unveiled at an gathering in a London landmark on Wednesday night. Senior figures from Uefa and the host football associations were barracked as they arrived the location by around fifty protesters, who called for Israel to be expelled from the sport because of the conflict in Gaza.

Signs were raised with phrases reading “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while activists chanted: “Kick Israel out.”

Championship Fixture List

The opening game of the tournament will be held at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, on Friday 9 June, a game that will include the Welsh team if they make it.

Wembley Stadium will host the two semi-final matches and the championship match, which will be played on a Sunday in July 2028 with a kick-off time at 5:00 PM.

It is anticipated that an afternoon start, which will also be used for European club finals from the upcoming season, will cater to families and help engage a wider spectrum of audiences.

Qualifying Teams

The Republic of Ireland are set to play their first game at the Aviva Stadium and the Scottish team would play similarly at Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

The national sides of all four hosts will participate in the qualification process; two guaranteed slots will be reserved for any that miss out on the finals through the standard process.

Venues and Knockout Stage

The Birmingham venue and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium complete the event’s nine venues. Each one will hold at least one playoff fixture, with the last eight staged at the national stadium of each host.

The qualifying draw will be held in the Northern Irish capital, which was excluded as a host city last year when it was revealed the proposed venue could not be redeveloped in time, on December 6, 2026.
