Israelis mark two-year anniversary of October 7th incident as Gaza ceasefire negotiations continue
Israelis have come together around the country to remember 24 months since the Hamas-conducted assault on that fateful day in October 2023, as negotiations proceeded in the neighboring country over an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
The attack resulted in more than 1,200 people losing their lives and 251 others abducted away to Gaza as captives. It was the single deadliest day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.
Israel responded by beginning a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed over 67,000 people, as reported by the region's Hamas-run health ministry. Its figures are considered reliable by the United Nations and other international bodies.
"Our violent opponents have caused great damage, but they have not overcome us," the prime minister remarked on that day.
He also pledged to "realize all the objectives of the war: the homecoming of all the kidnapped, the destruction of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will never again create a danger to Israel".
Commemorative Gatherings Across Israel
The government authorities delayed state remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the Jewish High Holiday season - but gatherings still were held across the country on that day.
A memorial ceremony for the loved ones of people killed in the Hamas attack was organized in the coastal city. Put together by the victims' relatives, it was televised throughout Israeli TV networks.
Some time earlier, a silent tribute was held throughout the country.
Ceasefire Talks in Egypt
Meanwhile, the conflicting parties' representatives convened in the North African tourist destination of the Egyptian city for a continuing round of mediated discussions to discuss the terms of the proposal.
A senior Palestinian official familiar with the discussions said that an late session of mediated discussions started at 7 PM local time.
The source explained the morning session concluded without tangible results, because of differences over the proposed Israeli pullout plans from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to guarantee Israel does not recommence hostilities after the initial stage of the agreement.
He noted that the talks are "tough and have yet to produce any significant progress," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the conflicting groups.
Key Matters in Talks
- An enduring truce
- The swap of the prisoners still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
- The removal of military personnel from Gaza
- Measures for humanitarian aid deliveries
- Post-war governance of the region
Public Reaction
In the city's memorial area previously, young Hagar - whose sibling lived through the incident on the gathering, where hundreds were killed and dozens more were abducted by Hamas gunmen - explained: "Nowhere appears as home anymore and until all the hostages return no one will be secure."
"After we see everyone home again, we can feel relief once more. Then we can commence rebuild," she continued.
Outside the prime minister's residence in Jerusalem, people gathered to show their backing for the loved ones of the abducted. Israel states nearly fifty stay in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.
Protester one woman explained: "It's necessary do every compromise needed for the abducted to be released. But we sincerely need assurances that we will be secure."
Surveys now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of the population desire the hostilities to finish in return for the liberation of the hostages.
Gaza Situation
At the site of the music event, those paying respects gathered to pay their respects.
From the site, the boom of Israeli air strikes and shelling could be heard just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people said the intense Israeli attacks carried on.
In Gaza City, attacks were documented in the dawn of that day in the west side neighborhood, Rimal and locality neighbourhoods and in the east side area of the community, as well the camp to the northwestern area.
"As the dusk falls, the dread appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was lost his life by an Israeli aerial attack previously, shared.
"We are afraid of the air strikes. During nighttime we are resting together, embracing, notably my smallest child who places his face on me throughout the night."
"Constantly we monitor the news to see developments. And I'm afraid that this truce will not be achieved and that the fighting will resume to us."
