New Year's Revelers Told to Wrap Up Warm with Snow Expected Throughout the UK
Meteorologists are reporting an icy beginning to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are advised to dress warmly as sub-zero temperatures are forecast for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Events Proceed Amid Warnings
The Scottish capital's iconic Hogmanay festivities are set to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This comes despite weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those who are celebrating, so additional clothing will be necessary," noted the weather service.
Celebrations Under Open but Cold Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is likely to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with dry conditions and good visibility. The mercury are expected to be chilly, making extra layers essential, said forecasters.
In more northern areas, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to impact visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," remarked one forecaster.
Broad Advisories for Friday
Heading into Friday, weather warnings have been issued for Northern Ireland and extending from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- Travelers have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are likely on trains and buses.
Temperatures Forecast to Plummet Even More
Going into the new year, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. Temperatures are expected to plummet as snow and gale-force winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
About 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Medical Alerts Released
In addition, amber cold health alerts are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
The health agency explained this indicated the weather could to cause major effects across the NHS and care systems. This involves a potential rise in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
