The pace bowler increased the fitness woes of the England squad upon exiting the ground during Saturday's play of the Boxing Day Test in the Ashes series.
Atkinson experienced discomfort in his left hamstring after the final ball in his spell during the morning session.
The England team reported the 27-year-old had experienced "tightness" and was to take time off the field for further assessment "in the coming hours".
The final Test of the series beginning on 4 January begins on Sunday, 4 January.
The English side has previously lost key quicks one seamer due to knee trouble and Jofra Archer because of a side injury during this series.
A replacement bowler was called up as injury reinforcement.
Atkinson struggled early in the series, claiming a mere a handful of scalps.
He was omitted from the previous Test, then recalled for the Melbourne Test as Archer's replacement.
Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, claiming a couple of wickets during the host's first knock, before adding 28 with the bat among just a trio of England players to get into double digits.
Following a brief spell at the end of day one, he resumed for the second day's play and had nightwatchman edging to the keeper.
However, towards the conclusion of his spell, he bowled a change of pace to Travis Head and suddenly grabbed at his leg.
The English bowler was recalled for the fourth Ashes Test after being left out the Adelaide game.
