The Details Known Concerning the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

No fewer than 16 people were killed and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers opened fire at a Hanukkah gathering at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian authorities have called a terrorist attack.

According to the most recent information, authorities have announced the number of fatalities is 16, which includes one of the suspected gunmen. Additionally, 42 injured people were taken to hospital.

The victims have not yet been officially identified, but authorities state their ages span from 10 and 87 years old.

Below are the individuals who have been named so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a joyful rabbi who went to a beach to spread happiness and light, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member remarked.

Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the birth of their youngest child in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments before the attack, stating they had been standing together when the gunfire started. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French foreign ministry have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is a casualty.

In a statement, a senior official declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must combat,” the statement continued.

One Child

A 10-year-old girl who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was also killed in the incident, according to reports citing the Israeli foreign ministry.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospital, a significant number are still under care, with several in serious condition. The injured include two officers who responded to the attack.

One of the injured is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Called a hero, he sustained gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. Reports indicate he was wounded and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the incident as an “utter carnage,” but also noted the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “dozens and dozens” of shots.

“I thought it was rubber bullets, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he stated. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
