One of the original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.

Ben Cohen, who co-founded the business with Jerry Greenfield, disclosed that he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor as part of an individual series highlighting issues Ben & Jerry's has been barred from addressing publicly.

Ongoing Conflict Involving Founders and Parent Company

The recent development deepens the ongoing disagreement between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the UK-based consumer goods giant which acquired the ice cream brand since 2000.

The co-founders maintain how Unilever and their ice cream division Magnum unlawfully blocked their company against "fulfilling its ethical commitments".

Watermelon Sorbet as a Symbol of Support

The entrepreneur stated through an Instagram video that he's developing an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, asking for public suggestions for naming options plus potential ingredients.

“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared in a cooking set. “I'm creating a watermelon-flavored frozen dessert that advocates for lasting ceasefire for Palestinians while demanding addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”

The watermelon has emerged as an emblem of solidarity with Palestinians due to its colors, that closely resemble those of the Palestinian flag – the distinctive four-color pattern.

Historical Social Engagement and Recent Changes

In 2021, the ice cream company refused to sell its products in areas under Israeli control, leading to the parent company selling the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting ongoing distribution in disputed territories.

The new product line will be created through Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the activist ice cream brand which was first established several years back to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".

Leadership Changes plus Future Intentions

The founder revealed how he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors that address issues which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from speaking about openly due to Unilever.

The announcement follows co-founder Jerry Greenfield stepped down from Ben & Jerry's in September, following many years of involvement, citing worries that its independence had been compromised after Unilever's decision to restrict their advocacy work.

At that time, Mr. Cohen stated how “My partner has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was deeply distressing him."

“My conscience compels me to keep working within the organization to fight for its independence ensuring that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the values that it was founded on while upholding for decades," he told journalists.
