The network's Premier Fresh Series of This Year Gets a Major Extension for Two More Seasons.

During the fall season, Adult Swim debuted a new season of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. However, later that same month, the network introduced a brand-new animated series with a strikingly different feel. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often marked by bleakness, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.

A Major Commitment

On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been greenlit for two additional seasons. This provides showrunner Joe Cappa significant creative freedom to further explore the world of the Campbell family. The show focuses on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.

"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," said Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to continue exploring the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."

A President's Endorsement

In the same announcement commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and oddly captivating." He thanked the fans who found the show and advocated for its uniquely offbeat sensibility.

"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," commented Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"

A Different Kind of Comedy

When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was described as "a comforting antidote" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this endearing family navigate their daily lives.

In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa expressed his goal to help comedy break out of its prevailing sarcastic tone. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.

“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” noted Cappa. “It feels as if we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”

The Path Forward

With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences a little more time to bask in the gentle humor of the beloved Campbell clan.

The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns airs on December 21st. The entire series is ready to watch on HBO Max.
